Nowadays you can even become a professional mermaid and swim with a mermaid tail. The history of mermaids goes a long way back. Although some stories say that mermaids are cute and romantic fantasy figures, in reality they are mythological creatures in different shapes. Some people say thay have seen real mermaids, others only know them from stories. The famous Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen has been sitting on her rock since 1913 and is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
